So Wednesday (6/2) was our second full day of podcast recording. We recorded most (we still have to pick up a few more scenes—more on that later) of three episodes—“Karl and Bernie and the Dirty Movies” (#204), “Karl and Bernie Go To a Tea Party” (#205), and “Karl and Bernie and the Heroics” (#206). Oh, and just to make it confusing, those are the episode numbers we’re using, but we’re actually going to switch them around a little bit—“Dirty Movies” will be the third episode you hear, followed by “Tea Party”, and then our previously recorded “Karl & Bernie Quit Smoking”. Why? Well, there are a couple of characters from the second episode (“Karl and Bernie Rent a Hobo”) who return in the “Smoking” episode, and we wanted to put a little space between those episodes. So anyway, this will surely lead to lots of confusion come editing and posting time.
We were going to start the day with scene from all three episodes featuring Karl’s girlfriend Denise, aka my wife Rebekah; we usually do her stuff early, since she works a mid-day shift and has to be at work around 1. However, a scant two days before the session, she found out she would be en route to Louisiana Wednesday morning (she’s in the news biz). So we’ll have to pick her stuff up later, at our final session in July. That day will also include a few scenes with our buddy John Mahoney, who was going to join us to do a few scenes but was very, very sick.
Anyway, we began with our good friend Jessie Griffin, making her Karl & Bernie debut as a romantic interest for Bernie who has, well, some interesting secrets. She also did a few lines as a deli clerk in a robbery scene; it was very cute how she was worried about her bad Indian accent, as if that actually mattered. We then grabbed a few Karl & Bernie duet scenes, and were then joined by Mrs. Welch, who did a killer bit as the casting director who conducts Karl’s “screen test”. Next in were Mike’s buddy Tom (who stepped in at the eleventh hour to play a laid-back drug dealer and did a great job) and the great Meridith Jones, who is our female lead in the “Heroics” episode, and grabbed a few other small roles in the other two episodes.
The second half of the day was a blur of lovely ladies: Melody Lane, Kristin Brown-Jiminez, Amy Hughey, Amber Malott. All were game for some slightly dirty stuff, although, in all fairness, they came up with as many chants for the anti-porn rally scene as we did. We closed out the day with some Karl & Bernie outros, and that was the day.
Today I wrote the seventh episode, “Karl & Bernie and the Kid”; I’ve got two more scripts to write for this season/series/whatever, which we (being me, Mac, Mike, and MJ) plotted out over lunch Wednesday. Once those are done, I’ll get started editing these bad boys, and then we’ll get the last three episodes in the can come July. All good fun so far, folks.
